Poles Apart

Poles Apart consists of ten slender glass-fibre/polyester rods, each 3.5m high, perpendicular to the surface of the land and equally spaced in a 7.3m row. The rods are painted with bands of colour of varying length, separated by intervals of neutral colour. The poles themselves–like the surrounding plants–change shape and colour constantly in response to their environment. The work complements its setting. But unlike its environment, the work guides the viewer’s eyes back and forth between highlights of colour, across something like a surface. The work was installed at Enys Gardens (just off the A 39 between Truro and Falmouth) between May and October, 2010.
