Pole at High Beara

Pole at High Beara, the first Colour Construction, is installed in a woodland of tall, mature trees on Dartmoor, in Devon. The pole is a 7 1/2 m. tall tube made from glass fibre reinforced with polyester fibres (with some similarities to the structure of bamboo). It flexes and sways with the wind in a way which is different from the movement of the trees, prompting viewers to notice the difference. The tube carries bands of saturated colour at intervals, separated with darker more sombre hues. When the pole sways, the colours appear to flicker, to appear and disappear in a tempo and intensity that continually changes with the light and the weather.
