Polar Correspondence consists of five slender glass-fibre/polyester rods, each 2.5 m high, perpendicular to the surface of the land and arranged a regular intervals. They form a loose arc, responding to the shape of the bamboo stand behind them.Tall, flexible and responsive to light and wind, these man-made “poles” bear some resemblance to the bamboo. And yet they are markedly different. They are painted with bands of colour of varying length. Some pick up the green of the bamboo and deep purple of its shadow, others contrast sharply with their surroundings. The bright colour on the rods tends to appear closer to the viewer; the darker colour further away. Each of the five colours leads the eye, rising and falling across the five poles. Distances seem to change as you look.
