My recent work is made to be placed in the natural environment. I use synthetic materials, GRP (fibreglass) tubes and rods and Dacron (sailcloth). The GRP is flexible and strong, with a surface ideal for coating with acrylic paint.

The constructions are coloured using a highly durable acrylic paint which is coated with a semi-matt varnish with a UV filter. This protects the colours from fading as well as forming a tough surface which limits damage from bird strikes and flying debris and is waterproof.

All the surfaces are curved. This reduces the effect of wind, and I believe helps to prevent any fading.

The voids between the forms allow the wind to pass through and also enable a viewer to relate the work to the background.

Placing the work outside results in continuous varying lighting conditions from dawn to dusk, causing the shadows and reflections within the structures to be constantly shifting. The colour relationships are modulated by the weather conditions and time of day, from bright sunlight, overcast skies and rain. The seasonal changes in the background also have an effect on the perception of colour relationships within the work.

These constructions are non-figurative. Searching for meaning is futile. Applying similes will impede understanding. Slow looking from all angles, will reveal the relationships between the colours and forms. This requires the participation of the viewer, an engagement with the work,
